The Summer Movie Preview (With Trailers!)

With the opening of Spider-Man 3 this Friday signaling the start of the movie summer, I decided to take a look at the trailers of the 20 most antecipated (by me) movies coming our way this season. The goal? To try to figure out what are the must sees, the promises and the must avoids. Here are the results.

Looking Great

Spider-Man 3

(Quicktime Version)

I already know the Venom story from the comics, so it didn’t bother me, but don’t you feel that this trailer shows a bit too much? Also, I’m a bit concerned that they might be trying to cram way too much stuff in just one movie. Notice that while earlier trailers gave a lot of space to the Sandman storyline this last one barely manages to show him at all.

Still, the first two spidey films were great, and this one has Venom, so I’m still thinking this will kick ass. We’ll find out for sure soon enough.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

(Quicktime Version)

The trailer has a little less Jack Sparrow than one would like. But it does make the film look epic and gives us a taste of what seem like some pretty awesome action scenes. Also, Chow-Yun Fat is in it, which always amps the cool factor at least a bit.

I loved the second one, and I get the feeling that the third will give the series a suiting end.

Shrek The Third

(Quicktime Version)

You know, part of me thinks we had enough of this series. The second film was good, but not great. So perhaps the third one will be too much.

But then I look at the trailer and I think “Yeah, this looks fun”. So I’m keeping this one as a must see on my list.

Transformers

(Quicktime/Windows Media Version)

Sure, there is much about this project that could get one worried, starting with the “directed by Michael Bay” part. And the trailer certainly doesn’t wow. But think about this: giant robots, fighting each other. Do I really need to say more?

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

(Quicktime/Windows Media Version)

If you didn’t like the other Potter films, I doubt that this one will be any different. But for the fans this has the potential of being the best movie so far.

Ratatouille

(Quicktime Version)

It’s Pixar, and that means something. Probably won’t be as great as Toy Story 2 or Finding Nemo, but should still be a strong addition to Pixar’s roster.

Knocked Up

(Quicktime Version)

Judd Apatow made a fan of me with 40 year old virgin. So you can be pretty sure I’ll be eager to see how his second time on the director chair worked out. Beyond that, the trailer is funny and the premise is interesting. Not quite as interesting as a 40 year old virgin, but still.

Maybe, Maybe Not

The Bourne Ultimatum

(Quicktime/Windows Media Version)

Seems like more of the same. Which is enough to get me excited, but not enough to make me jump up and down with anticipation.

Live Free or Die Hard

(Quicktime/Windows Media Version)

On one hand, it’s Die Hard and it has a car being thrown against an helicopter. On the other hand, it’s Die Hard 4 and it has a freaking car getting thrown against AN HELICOPTER! Could be really fun or could be really silly.

Ocean’s Thirteen

(Quicktime/Windows Media Version)

Th Ocean’s movies always look like they are going to be good, but the actual films have left me cold so far. Maybe third time is the charm?

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

(Quicktime Version)

Like I said a couple of days ago, the trailer for this is much better than I expected it to be, so I still have some hope that FF2 could be good. But the bad taste from the first film still lingers on my mouth.

Surf’s Up

(Quicktime Version)

Unlike the Shrek and Pixar films, I don’t think Surf’s Up is going to be good enough to have a really broad appeal and to be loved by both adults and kids. But it does seem like it might be an above average animation and a good option if you want to take the kids to the movies.

The Simpsons Movie

(Quicktime Version)

I love The Simpsons, and the trailer made me laugh. But is this really something special that deserves to be seen in a theater? I hope so, but I’m still not totally convinced.

28 Weeks Later

(Quicktime Version)

When they announced that a sequel to 28 Day Later was in the making and that it wasn’t going to be directed by Danny Boyle, I immediately thought the film was going to suck. But the trailers and posters for the movie have turned me around. It still could suck, but at least it has the potential to be a very good horror movie.

Hairspray

I was ready to be wowed by the trailer for this one, and I just wasn’t. Still, early word from people who have seen more of the movie’s footage has been really good, so perhaps it will work after all.

Of course, I’m writing this from the perspective of someone who loves musicals. I’m sure that for many of you this will be a definite pass since it’s got people breaking out in song.

Did Anybody Say “DVD”?

I Now pronounce You Chuck and Larry

(Quicktime Version)

Sandler’s movies are almost always passable, but rarely really funny. I’m guessing this one won’t be the exception.

Halloween

The original Halloween was a great film, but it is a little dated by now. So I’m open to seeing a re-imagining of it. But the trailer made this look like a cheesier version of the original.

Evan Almighty

(Quicktime Version)

I actually don’t think the trailer for this one is that bad. But the trailer for Bruce Almighty was very good and that film turned out to have about two funny jokes in it. Still, Steve Carell could always surprise us all.

Underdog

(Quicktime Version)

It’s like Superman, but with a dog! Yeah, I’m sure this will work.

Hostel 2

Perhaps if I didn’t hate the original Hostel I would like this trailer. But I did hate the original Hostel, so I don’t.

So, what do you people think? Did I forget something? What are you excited about seeing?
