Pretty much every biopic of a famous musician follows the same storyline. Obscurity, success, drugs, fall from grace, return. And yet, some are really really good. And others are really really bad. I’m guessing El Cantante will be one of the later.
One big problem here is that you have a supporting actress that is just sooo much more charismatic than the lead. I’m sorry, but Marc Anthony just doesn’t have what it takes to make his supposedly incredibly talented and successful character stand out. In a trailer that is all about him, he still manages to fade to the background. I’m guessing the same dynamic will appear in the movie.
I recently saw Battle Royale on the DVD. That movie is filled with copious amounts of disturbing violence. And yet, it still manages to a have a deeper meaning and to be quite good. I’m guessing The Condemned will score on the violence front but miss on the two others.
Do yourself a favor, go rent BR instead of watching this.
The trailer starts out well, but then it very suddenly tries to up the tension and I have to say, what comes after didn’t really work for me. I’m just not sold on the ticking clock part of the movie, it is an interesting idea, but the trailer doesn’t convince me that it was well executed.
Still, the premise is strong enough to get me interested, and David Goyer (the writer/director of this film and co-writer of Batman Begins) is obviously a talented fellow. So I still want to see the movie. But not really because of the trailer.
Since having silly hair in a movie worked so well for Tom Hanks, I guess Nic figured it couldn’t hurt to try it. Let’s see how that turn out.
Honestly, the trailer makes the movie seem a lot more interesting than I expected. An action movie with a twist. I still don’t think this movie will be good, based on all the information we have about it, but the trailer does make me think there is an alternative future in which it could be good.
It’s Harry Potter, it looks good. No surprises here.
The movie looks like it is going to be bigger (and I mean that in an effects/action sense) than any of the previous films. Which is just as it should be.
This trailer is a little better than the last one (more exciting). It still seems like more of the same, but it does convey a little better that this might bring some sort of conclusion to the series. And more of the same in this case isn’t bad at all.
Yeah, I just don’t know. I love musicals, so I’m hoping that this turns out good. But the trailer doesn’t do much to convince me it will. The music and the jokes fall pretty flat.
