The Movie Trailer Blog

My main problem with this trailer, and what I imagine would be my problem with the movie if I saw it, is that it doesn’t really manage to go between comedy and drama smoothly. The transition from one tone to another is always very obvious and drastic. This undercuts the trailer because it never builds momentum with either the funny or the serious parts. When you start to get in the laughing mood a serious bit comes and spoils it, and vice-versa.

As I understand this is a much more serious effort than the normal Chris Rock fare. And it sure looks like it. But the dramatic part doesn’t seem that compelling, and the comedic part doesn’t look that funny. Add to that the transition problem I mentioned above and you have a mess of a trailer, and probably a mess of a movie.
