Surprisingly enough, I have never read any of Neil Gaiman’s books. And I’m not completely sure I have ever read a comic he wrote.
This is surprising because he seems like that kind of author who I would love, and because I have known about him and about his reputation since I was about ten years old. And yet, I never got around to reading hist stuff. So I guess watching Stardust will likely be my first exposure to Gaiman’s work.
The trailer makes the film look interesting. Nice visuals, a creative fantasy storyline, combining classic elements with a couple of new twists, and, hopefully, more sense of humor than most films in the genre. And yet, I’m not completely sold on it.
This kind of material could make for a Pirates style fun fantasy adventure. But a couple of scenes in the trailer make me think the humor might not work completely and that the story of the film just might be to focused too much on the classic fight the bad witch and not enough in the aforementioned twists. Also, the leading man, Charlie Cox, looks utterly uncharismatic. Perhaps I’ll warm up to him, but he is definitely no Johnny Depp.
We’ll see if my worries have any foundation in the actual film in August, when the it opens.
